Kinship & Foster Care

Providing safe, nurturing homes for children and young people in care

NT Friendship & Support provides Kinship and Foster Care for children and young people who are unable to live with their birth families under the Care and Protection of Children Act, administered by Territory Families.

Previously known as Out of Home Care, this service supports children and young people to live in safe, stable family environments — either with known kin or foster carers — where they are welcomed and supported as part of a household.

A Family-Based Approach

We use a family-home model of care, where children and young people are placed with assessed, trained and accredited carers who provide day-to-day stability, guidance, and emotional support.

  • Foster Care involves placing a child with approved carers who provide a loving and safe environment when birth family care isn’t possible.

  • Kinship Care places children with people they already know or are connected to — such as extended family or community members — to maintain cultural and relational continuity.

Cultural Connection and Community Partnerships

We work closely with Aboriginal organisations and communities to ensure children and young people maintain strong cultural connections. This includes opportunities to engage with language, culture, Country and kin throughout their care journey.

Support for Carers

We understand the important role carers play in helping children feel safe and thrive. That’s why we provide:

  • Ongoing training and 24/7 support

  • A dedicated case management team

  • Culturally informed guidance and wraparound care

  • Flexible placement options — including short-term, long-term, respite and emergency care
